St John Ambulance volunteer, Milly Sarre, has been shortlisted for the Specsavers Unsung Hero award in the Guernsey Awards for Achievement 2014.
Ms Sarre has been an active volunteer for St John Ambulance for more than 20 years and was previously recognised when she received the Honorary St John Award, the Serving Sister, which is approved by the Queen.
She is also one of the island’s few trained air escorts and accompanies patients off island for treatment. Milly travels as a carer with the Jumbulance charity, enabling physically disabled people to go on holiday and offering much needed respite to families.
Ms Sarre transfers her first aid skills to the younger generation by training pupils at St Andrew’s Primary School, where her grandchildren attend.
She also gives her time to the Belgrave Wanderers Football Club and attends all Priaulx league games providing First Aid cover, and for the previous 20 years has been the clubs leading first aider for all teams.
The Specsavers Unsung Hero award recognises an individual who has worked selflessly for the benefit of others within the community of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The winner of the award will receive a specially commissioned trophy and a £3,000 travel voucher as well as a donation to their nominated charitable cause.
St John Ambulance director of volunteers, Kay Bull, said: “Milly has shown outstanding commitment to St John and to the community for over 20 years, consistently giving up her own time and effort to help those around her. It is the dedication of volunteers like Milly that allows St John Ambulance to continue to provide our vital services to the community. We are extremely proud of her and believe that she is thoroughly deserving of this award.”
Founder and director of Specsavers, Dame Mary Perkins, said: "Now in its 14th year, the Specsavers Unsung Hero award does exactly what it says on the tin – recognises those people who give generously and selflessly of their time and efforts for the benefit of others. We are always heartened by the number of entries we receive. This award has become the voice of Guernsey people."
Six nominees have been shortlisted for the 2014 Specsavers Unsung Hero Award and the winner will be decided by online public vote. The vote will close on Friday 30 January.
