Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) is a UK registered charity set up in 2010 by some of the team behind the award-winning documentary film ‘The End of the Line’. BLUE aims to restore the ocean to health by addressing overfishing, one of the world’s biggest environmental problems. BLUE is dedicated to creating marine reserves, restoring vital habitats and establishing models of sustainable fishing. BLUE’s mission is to see 30 per cent of the world’s ocean under effective protection by 2030. BLUE is seeking a Jersey Project Manager to assist in managing and delivering our project in Jersey, the Channel Islands. This is an incredible opportunity to join a highly impactful charity at the cutting edge of marine conservation. Applicants must have experience of working in a similar role. The successful candidate will have great organisational skills and an ability to work under pressure, strong attention to detail and excellent written/communications skills.

The role will be based in Jersey, the Channel Islands.

Salary: £30,000 - £35,000 per annum based on experience

Hours & contract information:

Hours: Full time, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
Contract: 3-year contract; funding secured for 3 years 
Location: Jersey, Channel Islands
Holidays: 4 weeks leave per annum plus national holidays
Reporting to: UK Senior Projects Manager, BLUE
Requirements: This role requires the individual to have 5 years residency in Jersey holding an Entitled to Work Registration Card.

BLUE’s work in Jersey Jersey’s waters, with their kelp forests, seagrass and maerl beds, showcase some of the best shallow marine habitats in northern Europe. Many of these habitats are important ‘blue carbon’ stores. With BLUE’s support there is now the prospect of creating a new Marine Park that would be a multi-use space for activities that do not harm the marine environment and that bring together pre-existing    conservation designations. Studies undertaken by a BLUE funded PhD have found that habitats within existing MPAs protected from mobile fishing are recovering.  To ensure fishing communities can continue to operate, thrive and co-exist alongside marine conservation, BLUE hopes to apply our model of fishery co-management developed in Lyme Bay. The post holder will work with the Senior UK Project Manager, wider BLUE team and collaborators on Jersey to deliver a Marine Park that benefits people, nature and climate.  The role will be based at The National Trust for Jersey, The Elms, St Mary and the post holder will be expected to integrate, support and be an active member of The National Trust team.

Role Outline and Main responsibilities:

Responsible for delivering day to day of BLUE’s project in Jersey.
Build good working relationships with stakeholders including Government, NGOs and the fishing sector on Jersey.
Facilitate meetings and stakeholder engagement including with the Jersey fishing sector.
Implementation and management of a Jersey fisheries working group.
Coordinate annual biodiversity and fisheries monitoring within Jersey waters and the proposed Marine Park.
Support the delivery of a blue carbon case study in Jersey.
Management of partners and consultants in the delivery of agreed workstreams.
Assist with the creation and management of a Jersey snorkel trail.
Writing of reports summarising biodiversity, carbon and fisheries outputs.
Development and implementation of a low impact fisheries model in Jersey.
Conduct research and information gathering relevant to projects and provide summaries of these where appropriate to the project team.
Occasional support to partners in conducting field work.
Assist with regular reporting to BLUE and funders on progress against deliverables.
Develop funding proposals for government, trusts and foundations as well as private donors.
Write reports and proposals for internal and external consumption as and when required.
Attend and speak at relevant national and international marine conservation workshops, meetings and conferences when required.
Represent BLUE at meetings, events and other engagement opportunities including at local community level.
Creation of content such as blog writing and updates for BLUE’s website and other communication platforms including social media. Ensure all databases are maintained and up to date.
Actively liaise with local media and build relationships to help promote the concept, values and benefits of a marine park

Candidate profile:

Relevant qualification and experience of marine science, marine conservation or fisheries.
Relevant experience working with the fishing industry and marine stakeholder engagement.
Self-motivated and able to work using own initiative.
Able to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and meet key deadlines.
Able to travel, as and when required, to projects within the UK.

Able to multi-task and work across multiple documents and platforms.
Excellent written and communication skills.
Excellent attention to detail.
Competent using Arc GIS.
Command of Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe software (Acrobat and InDesign) as well as experience in using CRM software
Great inter-personal skills across all sectors of the community
A good team player with a flexible approach
