16-year-old budding politician helps revamp Town Hall

One Jersey College for Girls student is so keen to get into politics she’s got herself a part-time job at the Town Hall and her help is reaping rewards for the parish.

Amy Vatcher did her Project Trident work experience at the Chief Minister’s department where she got a good insight into local government. But she was so keen to learn more about how the Island’s parishes are run that she set up a few weeks’ work experience at the Town Hall.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said: “Every year the parish accepts students on initiatives like Project Trident to get students into the workplace. She was so good at her job particularly on social media and website management, we offered her a part-time job afterwards.

“She’s got real flair, it’s a small investment for us and we can get some very fresh and remarkably professional help.”

Amy is working on a number of projects including re-vamping the Town Hall’s website and producing leaflets on the Changing Places campaign to improve toilet facilities for disabled Islanders.

Amy said: “I’ve learnt an awful lot, I’ve been able to learn that the parish does a lot more things. I’ve spoken to a lot of people and learnt what role they have in the parish.

“My dream job is to be a politician but it’s good to get experience – I really enjoy the work I’m doing. I would be very, very interested in being a politician in Jersey and having a say in the decisions that affect the Island.”
