Dozens answer call for retired medical staff

Wednesday 01 April 2020

A 'good egg' nurse, who retired after 30 years' service to pursue her lifelong dream of owning a café, is among the 49 former healthcare workers to offer to return to work to help the island through the covid-19 crisis.

On Monday, the Health Department issued a call for anyone who had been a health worker in the last three years to temporarily return to the profession.

The aim is to bolster the health service, which currently needs help from the following roles

  • nurses;
  • doctors;
  • dentists;
  • healthcare scientists;
  • pharmacists;
  • GPs;
  • Public health officers;
  • Pathology staff;
  • Care and support workers.

The retired professionals will be deployed to assist their health colleagues in a range of areas from direct patient care to supporting the corona virus helpline team.

"We want to prevent our health service becoming overwhelmed during this epidemic. I call on those of you who have relevant experiences in health care settings to please come forward and strengthen our fight against this virus. If we come together now, we can lessen its impact and help save lives,” the Health Minister commented.

His call was answered by 49 professionals in just 24 hours, whom the government issued a "huge thank you" to.

Kate Mills was among those to volunteer.

She retired from nursing last after 30 years to pursue her lifelong dream of opening a beach café by taking over ‘Café des Pas’.

The Havre des Pas café was due to open soon under the name 'The Good Egg', but the corona virus outbreak scuppered the plans.

Yesterday, one of Kate's daughters announced her mum's decision to go back to work in the hospital full-time.

"My mum is an incredible nurse and knowing we have people like her out there fighting this is comforting," she wrote.

"They are out there working for us, and we can do our part and help them too by staying at home. This is a time where doing absolutely nothing is absolutely everything."
