Firefighters to climb UK's highest mountains in aid of disabled footballers

Six airport firefighters are due to climb the highest mountains in the UK next month to raise funds for a charity that provides free football sessions for disabled young people.

The firefighters will take on the Three Peaks Challenge – which involves scaling Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in England, and Ben Nevis in Scotland – on 11 September.

Ross Aley, Curtis Monks, Jack Langford, Mark Ray, Neil Harvey, and Marcin Mietelka will be supported by their recently retired colleague, Alan Bertram, who will drive and assist them throughout the journey as they undertake a four-hour hike up each peak.

The firefighters are raising funds for Soccer Stars Juniors, a charity founded by team member Mark Ray that offers free football sessions for young people with learning or physical disabilities.

Those wishing to support the team's efforts can make donations through their JustGiving page.

How tall is each mountain?

  • Snowdon in Wales is 1,085 meters
  • Scafell Pike in the Lake District is 978 meters
  • Ben Nevis in Scotland is 1,344 meters
