Airport reopens after major effort to manage "extensive" damage

Friday 03 November 2023

Jersey Airport has reopened to passengers today after a significant and rapid clean-up effort which saw fallen roofing and debris taken away, the runway cleared and alarm systems repaired after the site was battered by 100mph gusts.

Ports of Jersey opened to passengers at midday, with scheduled flights due to restart from 2pm.

"Teams have worked to sufficiently address the damage caused by Storm Ciarán and ensure the Airport is safe, secure and compliant to reopen," Ports of Jersey said in a statement.

Earlier today, Airport Director Robin MacRae confirmed that the site had seen "a fairly significant amount of damage" that included roofing, sheeting and cladding coming off from a number of buildings.

And although radars, landing and communication systems all had to be checked after the strong winds triggered their alarms, there was "no significant infrastructure damage," Mr MacRae said.

He added that a lot of the debris had to be cleared from the airport before any flights could start.

Mr MacRae praised Airport staff who came in to help rebuild the airport.

“A massive, big shoutout to the teams here, who have been working really hard to get the airport open. A lot of this team themselves have sustained damage to their own properties.

“I’m just incredibly proud of them.”

Ports of Jersey reminded anyone travelling to the Airport to take care on the journey and allow plenty of time to travel there - as roads continue to be blocked across the island.
