Storm Ciarán fund opens for applications

Wednesday 29 November 2023

Islanders who were badly impacted by Storm Ciarán can now apply for short-term aid from a fund launched by the Bailiff.

The fund was established at the beginning of the month by the island's civic head, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, to support individuals and families who have been displaced and have suffered hardship as a result and who need short term aid to help them through difficulty.

Applications to the Bailiff's Fund are now open and should be made online before Thursday 7 December.

The fund will be administered by the Jersey Community Foundation and a board of six members including The Bailiff, Justice and Home Affairs Minister Helen Miles and the Constable of St Clement, Marcus Troy, whose parish was badly hit by the storm.

Depending on the availability of funds, a further grant round may occur early next year.

The Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, said: "Storm Ciarán was even more harmful in its impact on our community than predicted. In its wake, it became quickly apparent that that a number of islanders including families had suffered very significant loss with damaged homes and loss of personal possessions.

"The Bailiff’s Appeal was established to help those affected have access to prompt financial aid to help them stabilise and recover quickly.

"I am pleased to say that the appeal was met with an overwhelming response with donations from across the island. The funds received by the Jersey Community Foundation are going to those who need it most, providing them with one less worry at this difficult time.

"I am grateful to all involved, whether you donated or are helping administer the funds through various parish initiatives. Thank you."

Anna Terry, CEO of Jersey Community Foundation, added: “We are proud to support the community through the administration of The Bailiff’s Fund for Storm Ciarán.

"Our existing infrastructure and experience managing community fundraising initiatives allows us to move quickly to collect and administer financial aid.

"We hope that these funds will offer some support to those most affected by the storm.”
