If you think you've got what it takes to run around Jersey in less than six hours you could be in with a chance of winning a big cash prize.
There’s £2,000 up for grabs for the winner of next month’s Round the Rock ultra marathon – a 48-mile endurance test around the Island’s coast that will see competitors climbing a total of 1000 metres and burning around 500 calories an hour.
The current record is 6.15:48 set by Daniel Doherty two years ago and he’s confident it’s a time which can be beaten.
He said: “If the conditions are right and the competitor is in shape, there’s no reason why the six hour mark cannot be taken, but it’s going to take something special to do it. The course is challenging and varied.”
Organisers say the event on 2 August will be the biggest yet with endurance runners from the UK, Belgium and Dubai flying in to compete in the gruelling challenge.
Race Director Digby Ellis-Brecknell said: “It is imperative that all runners competing in the 48 mile event are experienced and understand the challenge of the competition.
“We ask that all competitors have raced at least a marathon before and each competitor must carry enough water to get them to the next stop. This is especially important if we are going to have a hot day.”
Mr Ellis-Brecknell is expecting to see more than 100 runners in the main event this year and more than ten relay teams, raising money for local charities – Headway, Jersey Autism and Jersey Sport for the Disabled.
They will set off from the steam clock at 6 am, running in an anti-clockwise direction around the Island and following a trail along the North coast, St Ouen’s Bay and the South coast before finishing at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel.
