ART FIX: Feeling proud in the Channel Islands

Friday 06 September 2024

LBGTQ+ islanders and allies will be heading across the water this weekend to celebrate Channel Islands Pride in Guernsey with a jam-packed three-day schedule – including a wedding!

Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

Channel Islands Pride

St Peter Port is rainbow-ready for this weekend's Channel Islands Pride celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.

Held in Guernsey this year, the event features a jam-packed schedule over three days – including the iconic parade and infamous drag bingo.

Star drag queen Tia Kofi, winner of RuPaul vs The World, will be headlining the main stage on Saturday 7 September.

New additions to this year's Pride include poets and spoken word artists, and a performance from Jersey ballet company Ballet d'Jèrri.

Plus, two brides will be making it official at a pride wedding ceremony – in what is believed to be a world first.

If you can't get to Guernsey for the celebrations this year, fear not, as the celebrations will be back in St Helier in 2025.

The event will feature traditional African food, dancing and music from local band The Balafonics and DJ Pete Bongo Beat. A raffle will also be held, with prizes including a family day-out at the Merton Hotel.

Jersey Music Association's inaugural Organ Festival will be welcoming some of the world's finest organists to various churches in St Helier from Wednesday 11 September to Friday 27 September.

Four recitals will be taking place, including a 'Battle of the Organs' at the Town Church on Friday 27 September.

Tickets can be purchased on the Jersey Opera House website.

Dementia Jersey exhibition

Dementia Jersey has teamed up with ArtHouse Jersey to create an art exhibition showcasing the work of the charity's art exploration groups, which are led by art therapist Lucy Blackmore.

'Our Day Out' will take place over Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September at the Grève de Lecq barracks, and aims to mark the charity’s 2024 campaign for International Alzheimer’s Awareness.

The exhibition will be open from 10:00 until 16:00 on both days with refreshments available.

Fun on the farm

Islanders can head to Hamptonne Farm on Saturday 7 September for Jersey Heritage's latest 'Discovery Days' event.

Meet farmers, millers and living history characters whilst learning about all things farmyard and heritage crafts at Hamptonne's Country Life Museum.

Open from 10:00 to 16:00, the family-fun event is free and facilitated by Jersey Heritage teams.

Grouville Country Fayre

Grouville Church will be hosting their family-fun Country Fayre this Saturday 7 September at Les Pres Manor.

A fun dog show, live music, welly throwing competition and the all-important duck race will be just some of the entertainment available from 11:00 to 16:30.

Food, drink and local produce will also be on sale, with proceeds raised going towards the church.

'I Extend My Arms' exhibition

A new art exhibition inspired by subversive wartime artists and produced by a group of contemporary queer creators is set to open this weekend.

'I Extend My Arms', running from 6 to 15 September at Capital House in St Helier, will feature works by Karl Murphy, Lewis G Burton, Yasmine Akim, Adam Perchard, and Jack Killick.

The exhibition draws inspiration from Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, who created groundbreaking art that challenging social norms during their time in Jersey in the first half of the 20th century.

It features a range of mediums including sound, video, sculptural installation, drawings and performance.

As part of the exhibition, the artists will be leading a series of workshops exploring themes present in their work.
