Islanders are invited to explore an exhibition by a Jersey-based artist that aims to shed light on the way autism presents in women, and promote a culture of understanding and acceptance.
Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.
Here's this week's offering...
Emilie Knight, an abstract expressionist painter based in Jersey, will hold her first solo-exhibition called 'Bloom' at the JARO Gallery on York Street — which invites viewers to "explore the depths of human perception”.
Ms Knight, who was diagnosed with autism last year, said that ‘Bloom’ aims to raise awareness of the condition and shed light on the way it presents in women.
She hopes this will help to challenge misconceptions about autism and promote a culture of understanding and acceptance.
The exhibition, which opened last week, features colourful paintings that Ms Knight created exclusively with her hands, fingers and feet to forge "an intimate connection between artist and canvas".
The artist explained: “This exhibition for me is about creating conversation, bringing important awareness to autism.
"It was really nerve-wracking but I was thrilled to be given this opportunity to finally showcase my first solo show."
She added: "Art has always been very therapeutic, this has given me the platform to deep dive into the whole process of creating a collection of works that I’m really proud of and it’s also given me the confidence to take my passion further."
JARO art gallery owner, Jasmine Rose Noel said: “I get approached a lot by local Jersey artists to showcase their work in the gallery, it wasn’t until I met Emilie and saw her work, and listened to her story that I felt deeply compelled to spread her message in her quest of tranquillity and calmness through art and shining light on how art can help in many forms of creativity.”
Emilie completed her Foundation Year in Art and Design at Plymouth College of Art and later pursued a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at the University of Plymouth before moving to Jersey in 2016.

The show forms part of a series of community-focused events and concerts showcasing international and local artists organised by Island Music.
Trudi Roscouet, who won the 2023 Inspirational Woman of the Year Award for her campaign to raise awareness of how menopause affects women in the workplace, is hosting a two-hour nutrition workshop and walk this Sunday.
The organisers said: "Our daily hustle obscures the impact of lifestyle on health, but Trudi's enlightening walk from Plémont to Grève de Lecq cuts through the noise.
"Start your Sunday with a step towards vitality; conversations on nutrition and responsible living take centre stage, turning this scenic route into a catalyst for personal transformation.
"This invigorating walk is not just scenic; it's a call to action, urging you to rethink and refine your habits for a healthier existence."

The Harbour Gallery's latest exhibition, which opened last week, features photography and paintings focusing on underwater life and oceans by artist Simon 'The Frogman' Heron.
Describing himself as having had a camera “stuck to my face for most of my life”, Simon’s early subjects were surfing and the sea birds of Jersey, mostly taken with his dad’s old Voigtländer camera.
He said: “My parents, realising I’d never be a quantum physicist, encouraged my creative path studying fine art under the tutelage of Fredric Sands RI at De La Salle College.”
Simon subsequently won the Société Jersiaise’s Barreau Art Scholarship, and went on to study graphic design and illustration at Southampton Solent University.
Since then, his work has appeared nationally and internationally, from the Sunday Times to the National Geographic.
Simon's 'Sea + Sky' exhibition will be officially opened at 18:45 on Friday 26 April and continue until Sunday 19 May.
