Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize, the UK's most celebrated drawing exhibition is in Jersey for the first time.

Having opened to the public last week, the show will run until Sunday 26 March at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House.

This exhibition reflects a broad scope of outstanding contemporary drawing practice from across the world. Showcasing over 120 shortlisted artworks from the 2022 competition, the breadth of work on offer promises to create a spectacularly diverse display.

Alongside the exhibition, ArtHouse will be running a programme of talks, workshops and events. Further details and a full programme of events can be found here.

Ekphrastic poetry

On Wednesday 22 February, poet Traci O'Dea will lead a workshop in which attendees will read ekphrastic poetry – poetry inspired by another artform – and then explore the art in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize exhibition to find inspiration for writing their own poems.

Participants will craft their poems with feedback from the tutor and peers to develop their final pieces.

The following Friday 24 February, participants will be invited to a live poetry event where the poems created in the workshop will be read in a relaxed gathering with drinks.

Tickets for the workshop can be booked here, and free places for the poetry performances can be booked here.

The Island Drawing Challenge

Running alongside the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize exhibition, ArtHouse Jersey's five week 'Island Drawing Challenge' starts today.

Each Friday, ArtHouse Jersey will launch a new drawing theme via social media channels. The theme of the week will speak directly to the core work and focus of a featured local charity.

Charities taking part in the 'Island Drawing Challenge' include Jersey Trees for Life with the theme 'The Wonder of Nature', Beresford Street Kitchen with 'Soul Food', Brighter Futures with 'Families & Loved Ones', Jersey Mecap with 'And Relax...', and Art in the Frame who will share with week with ArtHouse Jersey offering people the opportunity to have an artistic free-for all and draw whatever they please.

Participants are invited to share their drawing on social media using the hashtag #islanddrawingchallenge while tagging @arthousejersey and the charity of the week. Those who would rather not use social media can submit their drawings via email to drawing@arts.je.

A selection of submissions will be shared online each week.

Our Island Communities' will bring together a small collective of up-and-coming local contemporary photographers:

  • Max Le Feuvre, whose work focuses on the meditative nature of recreational fishing;
  • Max Burnett, who studied the island's beekeepers and bridge players;
  • Max Baudains, who focused on maritime culture;
  • Will Lakeman, whose work explores human interventions to the landscape; and
  • Shan O'Donnell, whose work captures ‘Friends on Film’.

Dreaming Trees

Howard Davis Park has been transformed using light and sound this week as part of a new park illuminations event aiming to encourage islanders to get outside this winter, with 17,000 islanders having attended 'Dreaming Trees' so far.

The event has featured trees throughout the park lit up each evening of half-term, with images sent in by local children also projected onto the recently refurbished Howard Davis Hall.

As well as encouraging more islanders to explore the park during the winter months, the 'Dreaming Trees' project also explains more about international scientific research about the 'Wood Wide Web' which explores how trees communicate and share resources.

The Dreaming Trees illuminations continues to run every evening until Sunday 19 February.
