A Jersey artist's travels to Mexico have inspired her to explore her experiences and, in the process, provide support to a café dedicated to helping survivors of abuse and trauma.
Billed as "a captivating exploration of her experiences in Mexico", Kelly's artwork is to incorporate Mexican culture and the monarch butterfly in particular.
Her exhibition opens on Friday 29 September at the Butterfly Café in St. Helier and Kelly has pledged to donate half of the proceeds from art sales to the Butterfly Café, which provides opportunities and support for people who have experienced abuse.
The exhibition promises to showcase a rich culture with vivid colours and intricate details, and the monarch butterfly occupies a central part of this.
According to Kelly, the monarch. or 'Mariposa Monarca', is an iconic and revered symbol in Mexico. According to indigenous Mexican tradition, the butterflies transport the souls of the dead when they undertake their annual migration.
Monarch butterflies travel as far as Canada, thousands of miles from Mexico.
Kelly's exhibition is open from Friday 29 September to Friday 6 October at the Butterfly Café, with a launch on 29 September from 17:30 to 19:30.
