Artists battle against clock to create Conflict

Five artists had just 36 hours to transform the walls of the Arts Centre’s Berni Gallery and create WW1 inspired masterpieces.

Sharon Hall joined fellow artists Marc Medland, Glen Fox, Michael Dryden and Chantal Venton to take up the challenge over the weekend.

Mrs Hall created a collage using a mixture of paint and 90 postcards of war memorials mainly from the 1930’s.

She said: “I like to work to deadlines so having just 36 hours to complete the work was exciting. It helped me mix collage and paint together by working directly on the wall and it gave me the oppportunity to work on a much bigger scale. It was really nice to have a brief as I like to have a starting point and the Great War was really relevant and interesting, there has been so much info available on it since the start of the year.

“The Arts Centre is the only place in the Island where you feel that you are actually exhibiting in a gallery setting. It was such a great experience and a great opportunity and it’s a shame there isn’t more space for these sorts of exhibitions to happen more often.”

The ‘Conflict’ exhibition is the first of a full programme of events at Jersey Arts Cente to mark the 100^th anniverary of WW1.

It finishes on 22^nd February when the gallery walls will be re-painted, covering up the artists’ work forever.
