Local environmentalists hope their new online battery ad will give more power to their recycling campaign.
The ad on You tube features a young Jersey schoolgirl teaching her classmates that it’s dangerous to throw batteries in the bin because of the chemicals and metals inside them.
Most of us use more batteries this time of year to power up Christmas presents so the States recycling team think it’s an apt time to get their message out that it’s easy to recycle them.
There are battery banks in all the Island’s schools, at “bring banks”, in larger supermarkets and at the Household Recycling Centre at Bellozanne.
Once collected they are shipped off to a specialist battery recycler in the UK so that the metals can be reused again and the chemicals can be safely collected.
The Household Recycling Centre is open as normal on most days during the holiday period apart from on Christmas Eve when it is open from 7.30 am until 12 noon and it will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
The “Batteries don’t belong in the bin” campaign will continue into the new year when its mascot “Betty the Battery” will be out and about generating awareness.
