Bee part of the action

Sunday 23 July 2017

Jersey’s Beekeeper’s Association needs your help.

It’s staging a “Bio-Blitz” at its recently opened “Bee Field” in St Saviour today from 10:00 until 13:00.

Organiser John de Carteret says the aim is to “identify everything buzzing, hopping, flapping, and crawling under, on, or over the field.”

Action for Wildlife, Wild About Jersey, the Jersey Biodiversity Centre, the Sociéte Jersiaise and the States Environmental Department are all going to help to carry out the baseline survey to see how many different species of plant, inspect, spider, mammal, bird, snail, etc. can be identified and recorded in three hours, but the Jersey Beekeeper’s Association would still welcome more help.

But don’t worry if counting isn’t your thing, organisers say the event’s not just for experts “but for everyone interested in biodiversity in Jersey”. They’re keen to stress “even if you’re not intending to go down on your hands and knees, come along to see what we find, wander around, and watch whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a cake.”
