Hurricane that battered Caribbean heading this way

The Island could be in for some stormy weather this weekend if the tail-end of Hurricane Bertha heads this way.

Since battering the Caribbean Islands with gusts of more than 90 mph the hurricane has been moving across the Atlantic and is expected to reach Europe by the end of the week.

It has now been downgraded to a tropical storm and the Met Department say it’s too early to say whether she will cause unsettled weather in the Channel Islands.

Forecaster Peter Munns said: “We’d expect to see the earliest effect on Sunday but there’s a huge amount of uncertainty of how the remnants can get here to be categorical about whether we will or won’t see her.

“It could end up just off North-west Scotland, North-west Spain or anywhere in between.”

If she does hit here Mr Munns said it would be very unseasonable and we could expect to see strong winds and larger waves.

He said any unsettled weather wouldn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of this summer of heatwaves.

Hurricane Bertha left thousands of homes in the Caribbean without power.
