Charities launch big summer fundraising dip

Sunday 27 March 2016

Two local charities are challenging you to take a dip this summer and swim ’30 Bays in 30 Days’.

The National Trust for Jersey and Jersey Hospice Care have joined forces for a big sea swim fundraiser in July.

They say you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to take part, you just have to swim 30 strokes in each of the bays between Saturday 2 July and Sunday 31 July.

The National Trust for Jersey’s Chief Executive Charles Alluto said: “We hope as many people as possible will take part and enjoy this new challenge. Moneys raised will be split equally between Jersey Hospice Care and the National Trust for Jersey and will help protect Jersey’s Coastline forever and for everyone.

“We are also delighted to be working together with Jersey Hospice Care, both very difference charities, but both play important roles within the Jersey community.”

Jersey Hospice Care’s Chief Executive Emelita Robbins is eager to take the plunge.

She said: “This challenge offers the perfect opportunity to everyone to make the most of our beautiful coastline here in Jersey for the benefit of two deserving charities. As a regular Christmas Day swimmer, I am looking forward to enjoying warmer waters.

“At Jersey Hospice Care, we support our patients to make the most of every day. This new fundraising challenge, 30 Bays in 30 Days, is a perfect example of a way to do this. I am very pleased that we are able to do this in partnership with The National Trust for Jersey.”

There will be organised swims to open and close the month-long event and then it's up to you to decide where and when you swim to complete the challenge. If you've got mobility issues you can choose to swim in one bay, either at the Havre des Pas bathing pool or the Victorian Marine Lake at West Park.

The politician in charge of Sport Constable Steve Pallett said: “This is a great opportunity for all age groups and abilities to experience sea swimming in a safe environment whilst also raising much needed funds for both Jersey Hospice Care and The National Trust for Jersey.

“Staying fit and active through life is a key component of the Jersey sport strategy “Fit for the Future” and as an experienced sea swimmer myself, I am keen to support any initiative or event that increases participation in sport whilst also raises funds to protect our diverse and unique coastline, a coastline that attracts so many visitors to Jersey. I urge islanders to take part and support this innovative idea; I will be!”

It’s £10 for adults to take part and £5 if you are under 18. Families of five can register for £20 and it’s £50 for a corporate team or any other team of five.
