Lucky escape for man rescued from house fire

A man had to be rescued by workers from a neighbouring field after a fire engulfed his kitchen. Firefighters spent the whole of yesterday afternoon dealing with the blaze in a two-storey house on La Rue des Vignes in St Peter.

It started in a wood burning stove, and quickly spread, igniting the rest of the kitchen. The householder had to be taken to hospital for treatment, after inhaling smoke.

Eight firefighters battled the blaze, working at both the front and also the rear of the house, to prevent it spreading to nearby buildings.

The Fire Crews had to smash windows both to tackle the fire, but also also to vent the large volumes of smoke coming from inside.

Station Commander Jason Masterman said that had this fire occurred at night, then the outcome may have been a tragic one.

It's the third major fire in the Island in the last week. 

In the early hours of Friday morning crews attended a fire in a St Lawrence shed where they had to set up an exclusion zone because of the danger of exploding gas cylinders.

Later that night it took twenty firefighters to bring a fire at the Boathouse in St Aubin under control as it ripped through the roof of the restaurant. Nearly 170 people had to be evacuated from the building.
