The choir is currently made up of children aged 10 to 18 from 15 different schools, and is currently split evenly between boys and girls.

They are led by John Bowley and Nicki Kennedy, both well-known figures in the UK choral scene. They are keen to recruit new members from all of Jersey's communities, to become a large, representative and truly inclusive choir.

The Jersey Youth Choir meets on Wednesday evenings at the Jersey Academy of Music to sing mixed repertoire of pop, theatre, classical and folk music.

Junior members meet for an hour at 17:30 and senior members stay on to work on more challenging repertoire until 19:30. Refreshments are provided for the children.

An official launch will take place in January, but any children are welcome to come along for a taster session or attend the taster afternoon on 4 January 2023.

Dr Kyd and Georgi Mottram are patrons of the choir, with the red squirrel as its mascot. The animal was chosen as red squirrels can often be spotted in the grounds of Chateau Vermont, where the choir rehearses.

Choir founder, John Bowley said: "A truly diverse and inclusive Youth Choir is essential for any community. The benefits to children are well-documented, in educational terms, social development and in mental health and wellbeing.

"The island's adult choirs are struggling to find male singers in particular, and we are promoting a very strong boys' section which in the long term will boost Jersey's many choirs."
