Casino, new swimming pool or hotel – next big plan for Fort Regent to be unveiled

Thursday 11 September 2014

The States will unveil the latest set of plans for Fort Regent tomorrow – but what will they say?

After years of talk about putting new life into the leisure centre perched on top of St Helier, another set of plans is set to be released by Assistant Treasury Minister Eddie Noel.

There has been speculation that 11 years after the States decided to close down the old swimming pool at the fort – still one of the most recognisable parts of the St Helier skyline – that they might return with fresh plans to replace it, possibly with a competition-standard 50-meter pool.

But that’s not the only possibility - there have also been rumours about a casino, shopping centre, conference centre, sports stadium and flats over the years – but the reviews and reports on the future of the fort all seem to be gathering dust.

A presentation is due to be given to the media at 12.45 pm tomorrow at Fort Regent, followed by a public presentation at 5 pm.

It was reported a while ago that sections of Fort Regent could be leased out to the private sector to fund whatever work is needed on the site.
