Concerns over chargeable hours of new town car park

A newly-opened car park has created an additional 137 spaces in town – but concerns have been raised about the fact that users will be charged to park there until 22:00.

Charles Street car park opened over the weekend within the new Ann Court development, with access from St Saviour's Road.

From 08:00 to 22:00 every day, users will have to pay parking charges at the short-stay facility.

The Infrastructure Department explained that the decision to charge until 22:00 was made based on patterns observed at Minden Place car park.

Residents parking at Minden Place in the evenings and on Sundays take spaces away from the general public, the Department said.

The Charles Street car park schedule is currently a trial and is to be reviewed "shortly".

But concerns have already been raised by one local business.

Café Jac at the Jersey Arts Centre – which is located just across the road from the new car park – pointed out that having a three-hour parking limit in place until 22:00 does not offer customers enough time to eat dinner and watch a show.

In a post on social media, Café JAC staff said: "if you park at 17:00 for dinner, you will need to move the car again at 20:00. 

"We are looking into this, if there is anything we can do to make it easier to park, have dinner and see a show, but in the mean time, [we] don't want you to get caught out by it."
