The Christmas craze of going for a sea swim to get the big day started seems to be attracting more and more brave souls.
Hundreds of Islanders undeterred by low water and talk of possible storms waded into the water in a number of local bays.
The biggest turnout was probably the Jersey Swimming Club event at Havre des Pas bathing pool. Around 200 people – many dressed in festive fashion – took a dunk. Whilst many described the water as freezing, swimming stalwarts said it was one of the warmest Christmas Day swims they could remember. The sea temperature is still in double figures: a balmy 11C.
Elsewhere there were swims at St Brelade’s Bay, Quaisne, and Greve de Lecq. All were helping to raise money for local charities ranging from Hospice Care and the Jersey Animals’ Shelter, to Jersey Cheshire Home and St Ouen’s Football Club.
For those who can’t get enough swimming in cold water, or for those who missed out today, there’s another round of dips on New Year’s Day.
