Christmas tree collection scheme raises over £45,000 for charity

Jersey Hospice's Christmas tree collection and recycling scheme has raised over £45,000.

Launched in 2005, the annual fundraiser relies on volunteers – who drive around Jersey collecting trees in exchange for donations – to help raise funds for the charity, which runs the island's only hospice.

The charity thanked islanders after over 2,000 trees were collected across Jersey.

The event was sponsored by Rathbones this year.

The minimum donation was £15 per tree with additional trees costing a minimum of £5.

Islanders were also encouraged to base their donations on the size of the tree.

The recovered trees are turned into "soil improver" after being collected, shredded at La Collette and mixed with other vegetation.

Events manager Scott Douglas said: “This scheme is a big staple in the calendar – not just for us, but for the community – which is why we get such enthusiasm from everyone involved.

We’re thrilled we’ve raised in excess of £45,000 – that covers a month’s worth of care on our In Patient Unit, so it really does make a huge difference.”

It costs the charity £16,500 to operate every day.
