The man with the “best view” in the island cleared his final plane for landing on Friday after 34 years - and will himself soon be jet-setting on new adventures.
The now former head of air navigation services at Jersey Airport, Richard Mayne, has now retired from the role, which has seen him face challenges ranging from the fall-out of 9/11, and the Icelandic volcano eruption - and subsequent travel disruption - of 2010.
Mr Mayne started his career in 1988 as a trainee air traffic controller, working his way through the ranks until becoming the air navigation head around two years ago.
The 54-year-old said he was “incredibly lucky and fortunate” to be in a position to retire and travel the world – with a skiing trip in Austria among the imminent holidays.
