Confirmation of up to 20 newspaper job losses in CI

Wednesday 14 December 2016

It's been confirmed that up to 20 jobs are to go at Guiton, which publishes both the Jersey Evening Post and the Guernsey Press.

The news of potential redundancies first broke late on the evening of Friday 2 December, with a 'company spokesperson' being quoted initially on ITV Channel, saying that it was entering, "...a period of consultation, which will seek input from staff on the changes to the business that are required to provide the best possible services to our audience, both in print and online."

Today, the JEP has confirmed that up to 20 jobs are to go across Jersey and Guernsey, nine of them being compulsory redundancies, with the balance being non-replacement, early retirement and voluntary redundancies - the company says the 20 jobs equate to less than 10% of its workforce.

The paper adds it can now confirm those details because, "...the first phase of the consultation process has finished and those affected have been given details of the options open to them...While we are restructuring in some areas to meet the challenges and opportunities of the changing media landscape, we are also investing in new ventures to provide an even greater range of products and services."

"While there are exciting times ahead, the process of change can be painful, and the JEP will be saying goodbye to a small number of colleagues. Some of these have been part of the JEP family for many years, and their departure will be difficult and sad."

The paper said it was taking the step of publishing more details on the current situation as a result of..."Some inaccurate journalism by colleagues in rival news organisations [which] has fuelled a frenzy of wild speculation and assumption across social media and the blogosphere."
