Crude protest: oil dumped on £250,000 granite crossroads

Slick detectives are on the case in St Mary after vandals dumped oil over a controversial £250,000 traffic calming measure.

The new granite resurfacing at the crossroads by the parish church was meant to slow down drivers going through the village, but it’s been controversial.

The project has fuelled disquiet about States spending – with the quarter of a million pound bill coming at a time when major cuts or tax rises are expected to be needed to fund a £130 million deficit in public finances.

Police say that the vandals struck at about 6 am on Sunday morning, and that they’re looking for the culprits.

The police appeal said: “Police are looking for any leads in relation to damage caused to the new road surface at the junction of La Route de St. Marie and Route de L’Eglise in the early hours of Sunday 19th April 2015.

“Oil has been deliberately poured over the road surface causing damage to the granite surface.”
