De La Salle wins year 8 De Putron Challenge

Saturday 25 November 2017

The grand finale of the De Putron Challenge saw De La Salle College take home the prestigious Year 8 inter-island trophy, seven points clear of Guernsey’s Elizabeth College.

Sadly, newcomers St Mary’s Primary and Victoria College's lost against Guernsey's finest in the Year 6 and post-16 categories.

Newcomers to the challenge, St Mary’s Primary, missed out to Elizabeth College Junior School, having triumphed the previous week in the Jersey event, beating 18 other primary schools.

The same school won the post-16 inter-island title beating Victoria College’s team by just two points after a nail-biting finale while De La Salle College saved the day for Jersey, by beating another Elizabeth College team to take the Year 8 inter-island title.

Organisers say: "The questions were even harder than the teams had faced in their respective island finals but they all rose to the challenge and posted impressive scores."

Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation, said: “All the inter-island finalists certainly earned their places by winning their individual island titles.  It was extremely rewarding to see the students do so well, particularly under so much pressure.

“This event is designed to promote healthy competition between Channel Island schools and it’s particularly good for students who may not excel in the arts or sport to be able to take part in an event that is both educational and fun.  These future leaders of our islands really show how cool it is to be clever.”

The De Putron Challenge is already set to return for students in Year 6, Year 8 and post-16 age groups in 2018.
