Diabetes Jersey is set to welcome UK specialists to a conference which hopes to increase public awareness of the chronic disease which impacts over 4,500 islanders.
The charity described the 'Living With Diabetes' conference as its "most important event to date".
Statistically, one person is diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes every day in Jersey – but the condition's specific causes still remain unknown, and there is no cure.
The charity said the free day-long conference will be "of great benefit to the medical fraternity, everyone with the condition and members of the public", as well as local politicians.
The conference will take place on Saturday 15 June and be led by Dr David Hopkins, a consultant for the Diabetes Service in Jersey.
Dr Piya Sen Gupta will speak on the subject of ‘Prevention and Reversal of Type 2 Diabetes’, and Professor David Strain will discuss ‘Diabetes and Ageing’.
Professor Khalida Ismail will present a speech titled ‘Diabetes and the Mind – The Interplay Between the Condition and Mental Health’, and Professor Mark Evans will discuss ‘Living with Type 1 Diabetes – New Technology and Future Developments’.
Charity patron and diabetes specialist Dr Karen Kyd and Health Minister Tom Binet will also make speeches.
Chairman of Diabetes Jersey, Bill O'Brien said: “Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Dr Hopkins, we have been able to organise a conference that will greatly enhance our knowledge of the condition.
“In Jersey there are at least 4,500 people with diabetes and possibly a further 1,500 who might already have the condition and be unaware or will become diabetic in the near future."
He added: "A key role of [Diabetes Jersey] is to create public awareness of a condition which, if not managed, can ultimately be fatal.
"We are very grateful to our assembled team of visiting specialists and our main sponsor MySugarWatch."
