Disability awareness event set for next week

Sunday 01 December 2024

A disability charity will be at in town next week to talk to islanders about the services they offer to mark the International Day of Persons with a Disability.

Enable Jersey, which was founded over 50 years ago, hopes the event will help raise awareness of and break down the barriers that disabled people face.

International Day of Persons with a Disability is a United Nations-recognised celebration.

The theme of this year's event is "amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future".

Enable Jersey will be at Charing Cross on Tuesday morning providing information about their services and raising awareness of the needs of the 15,000 people known to be living with a disability in Jersey.

Charity CEO Sean Pontin said: "This is a great opportunity to raise awareness, mobilise support and promote the rights and perspectives of people with disabilities.

"It is Enable’s job to shine a light on the issues that still affect people living with a disability or long-term condition.

"As an island, we still have much to do to make sure the impact of disability is understood and that accessibility and inclusion remain a priority."

The charity's team will then take part, along with other support services, in the annual "Embrace our Difference" event which is being held at the Radisson Blu Hotel at the Waterfront.
