Disappointment for Dorey in Commonwealth Games

Friday 13 April 2018

There’s been disappointment for Elliot Dorey on day nine of competition in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Jersey athlete who has made his Commonwealth Games debut this year, finished last in his 1500m heat with a time of 3:52.75 – putting him second from bottom overall in the event.

Dorey has commented that he is disappointed with his performance, after he hoped to have qualified for the final.

The 2017 Island Games gold medallist was the final athlete to join the Jersey Team in Australia, after he won an appeal to race in the 800m and 1500m events.

Following the decision, the President of the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey, Paul De Feu, said: “Elliott’s ability and potential as a young and talented athlete was never the issue and we welcome him in joining the Jersey Team.”

Jersey’s final athletics hopeful, Zane Duquemin, finished 9th in the Discus Final by throwing a distance of 55.64.

In badminton, Jersey’s men’s double hasn’t qualified for the quarter finals after losing their match against Sri Lanka.

Although Matthew Bignell and Alex Hutchings couldn’t match their opponents in the second round, having to bow out of the competition 13-21, 13-21; it’s the furthest the two players have made it in the Commonwealth Games.

Gold Coast 2018 was Bignell’s first games – along with team mates Elise Dixon and Emily Temple-Redshaw - while Hutchings didn’t get through the first round of the 2014 Glasgow Games.

Dixon says she’s had a tough competition but is proud of her performance.

This weekend sees fullbore shooter Barry Le Cheminant enter the final day of the Queens Prize Individual Final just outside of medal position. Le Cheminant will be shooting in the 900 and 1000 yard rounds try to move up from 4th place, with fellow Jersey fullbore shooter David Le Quesne who is currently 11th.

Cameron Pirouet will also be flying the Jersey flag in the shooting event, as he takes his place in the Men’s 50m Rifle qualifier on Saturday.
