Teachers across the island will be cutting back on extracurricular activities and covering lessons from this week as part of the ongoing row over pay.
While members of the National Education Union (NEU) have voted to strike on 5th July, members of the other major union – the NASUWT – have today started taking action short of strike.
Parents and guardians were warned last week to expect disruption to normal activities as several teachers refuse to take part in lunchtime, after-school clubs and cover of other lessons.
They were also warned that some may not attend meetings outside of school or reply to emails out of hours.
That action will continue until a new pay agreement with Government is reached.
The Government had offered teachers a 7.9% pay increase in line with other pay groups – but members of both the NASUWT and NEU argued that this was not enough given that pay had not risen in step with cost-of-living for many years. They said that teachers had suffered an 8.8% real-terms pay cut since 2008.
The NASUWT have called on the SEB to agree the following pay awards for teachers:
Meanwhile, the NEU have requested a one-year pay deal for 2023 RPI + 5%.
