Want to know your home's history?

Tuesday 19 September 2023

Scandalous, romantic, dramatic or reflective of a moment in time... Do you know the story behind your home? Islanders are being offered the opportunity to find out.

Following the success of the first ‘Your Home, Your Story’ talks this year, Jersey Archive is offering islanders the chance to nominate their homes to be researched for next year's series of talks.

If your home is selected, the Jersey Archive team will explore the property's past and delve into the stories about the surrounding area and the people who lived there.

The research will also be featured in the series of talks throughout 2024, contributing to the preservation and celebration of Jersey's architectural heritage.

For those whose nominated homes are not selected for the public talks, Jersey Archive will offer an opportunity to explore their property's history with one-on-one assistance.

Stuart Nicolle, Senior Archivist at Jersey Heritage, explained that all people need to do to take part in the project is to fill in a nomination form giving details of the name of the property, exactly where it is, and why it should be chosen.

"Our YHYS talks have been very well attended and shown us there is a great appetite for house history in the island," Mr Nicole added.

"We're continuing the YHYS program in 2024 and looking for more homes to be nominated, whether they are apartments, farmhouses, cottages, or town residences."

The project is being sponsored by Antony Gibb Historic Buildings Consultants.

An online form is available HERE and nominations can also be emailed to archives@jerseyheritage.org. The closing date for nominations is 22 October.

The chosen homes will be announced in January 2024 and the free YHYS talks will take place on the third Saturday of the month throughout the year.
