DONATE: Emergency fundraiser to help tornado-hit families recover

Saturday 04 November 2023

An emergency fundraiser has been set up to help the St Clement families who lost their homes and belongings in the destructive Storm Ciaran.

The parish bore the brunt of the violent weather blast, with a tornado leaving what residents described as "total devastation" in its wake.

Hundreds of homes were damaged by winds which peaked at over 100mph and a freak thunderstorm at about midnight between Wednesday and Thursday which pelted the island with golf ball-sized hail stones.

Damage was particularly severe around FB Fields, Grève d’Azette and Rue des Prés.

Around 100 families have been forced to leave their homes, and are currently residing in hotels, the Government confirmed this afternoon.

In this weekend's Jersey Evening Post, numerous individuals living in the worst-hit locations have shared powerful testimonies of their terror as the tornado hit.

One islander living along the coast road, whose home is pictured top, explained how she retreated to her bathroom with her dog and called her brother in Australia, as she feared that her life was in danger.

St Clement Constable Marcus Troy has now set up an emergency online fundraiser to assist parishioners in their hour of need, and is also collecting donations via the Parish Hall and bank account.

The aim is to raise £10,000. Nearly £500 has been pledged via JustGiving since the fundraiser's launch earlier today.

"Your donations will make a huge difference to those who have suffered damage to properties and lost their belongings," Constable Troy said.
