Car parking charges are set to increase for the first time in two years.

Following no change in 2016, the Department for Infrastructure have pushed up prices by 2% in a bid to keep step with inflation.

From February 1st, parking will go up by 2p per unit/hour, accelerating from 76p to 78p.

The money funds the Jersey Car Parking Trading account, which manages the administration, maintenance and upkeep of the Island's 82 public car parks. Those exhausted with public transport might also be pleased to learn that the funds also support sustainable transport initiatives and road safety improvements.

Last year saw major refurbishments take place in Sand Street, while Pier Road was subject to improvement in 2015. Spoiler alert: this year attention will turn to the tyred Minden Street carpark.

Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for Infrastructure, commented: “Last year car parking prices did not go up, however this year, in order to keep pace with inflation and ensure we generate the income we need we must slightly increase charges, which are still amongst the lowest in the UK.”
