Two men who tried to put out a blaze at their neighbour’s had to be treated by paramedics after breathing in smoke and firefighters are warning Islanders not to try to fight fires themselves.
They had been throwing buckets of water at the fire at Oak Tree Gardens on Trinity Hill on Tuesday evening when firefighters arrived at the scene just after 7.30 pm.
There was lots of smoke and a crowd had gathered outside as two firefighters worked quickly to put out the fire.
Retained Crew Commander Fletcher said he would like to praise the initial actions of the neighbours but would also like to remind the general public of the dangers that fire can present, and that it is always best to "Get Out, Call the Fire Service Out & Stay Out".
