Time to fire up some dragons!

Saturday 17 September 2016

A local charity is hoping to fire up some dragons into helping them raise more than £50,000 this weekend.

The Condor Ferries’ Dragon Boat Festival in aid of Jersey Hospice Care is back on the Albert Pier on Saturday.

Thousands of people have helped raise more than £600,000 for the charity since the event first took to the water back in 1998 and the charity is hoping to top last year's total of £50,000.

Jersey Hospice Care’s Marketing and Communications Manager Linzi Duckworth said: “The Condor Ferries’ Dragon Boat Festival is always one of the highlights in our fundraising calendar.

“It’s not often that you get to see Minions competing against Where’s Wally and clowns taking on men in drag!

“As well as being great fun, it is also a significant fundraiser for us, regularly bringing in more than £50,000 for Jersey Hospice Care. Our daily running costs are approximately £14,000, so the amount raised is vital to allow us to continue caring for our patients and their families."

Condor Ferries’ Corporate Communications Manager Helen Day said:  “As active supporters of the local community, Condor Ferries is proud to be the long–term sponsor of the Condor Ferries Dragon Boat Festival, an event that is so deeply ingrained within the Jersey community.

“There’s a real sense of fun, energy and community spirit that characterises the Dragon Boat Festival and it raises a great deal of money for a very worthy cause. We’re delighted that so many people take part each year, carrying on the tradition of its success and generating even more money for Jersey Hospice Care.”

The first race starts at 10.00 and the big nine boat final will be underway at about 16.00.
