Ease off the pedal! Speed limit drops to 20mph in inner St. Helier

Friday 01 March 2019

Drivers are being warned to slow down when driving within the ring road and Havre des Pas area as the speed limit has now been dropped to 20mph.

The change comes after St. Helier’s Roads Committee, chaired by Constable Simon Crowcroft, voted unanimously in favour of the speed reduction back in April 2017, a decision subsequently approved by the Parish Assembly.

Speaking at the time of the decision, Simon Crowcroft told Express: "We carried out a consultation with local residents and although we didn't get a lot of feedback, despite an extended period of time, of the 60 responses that we received, a vast majority was in favour of the lower speed limit. This is not a new idea for St. Helier and it has always been part of the strategy."

"Why should St. Aubin's village, St. Peter or St. Mary benefit from lower speed limits when they are far more people living in the streets of St. Helier trying to walk, cycle and bring up their families," the Constable added. "Why should they be denied the right to be safer?"

The Infrastructure Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis, threw his support behind the Roads Committee's decision and the speed limit has now been dropped on the roads within the ring road as well as in the Havre des Pas area (generally bounded by Green Street, Route du Fort, St. Clement’s Road and extending to the Territorial Army barracks on Mount Bingham).

The Constable said: "Traffic speeds may be low during the working day, but at weekends and in the evenings St Helier’s residents have to put up with people driving at high speeds down their streets, which places them and visitors at risk of injury and which leads to a deterioration of their quality of life generally."

The Parish Roads Committee is also considering dropping the speed limit on other roads outside the ring road and is currently reviewing them.
