An "elderly" Chilean flamingo has died after Jersey Zoo was thrashed by 100mph gusts which felled several trees around the animal conservation site.
Jersey Zoo said in a short statement this afternoon: "Storm Ciaran has caused several trees to fall at Jersey Zoo, however, all staff are safe, and all animals have been accounted for.
"Sadly, one of our elderly Chilean flamingos has passed away.
"All the animals are being monitored and well cared for by our team."
The team said that the premises would remain closed tomorrow, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 November – when the now-postponed Durrell Dash was originally due to take place – "to ensure that the site has been properly checked and cleared of debris".
"However, we will keep the public updated if the zoo needs to remain closed into next week," they added.
???? We have made the difficult decision to postpone the Durrell Dash to Sunday 3 December due to extreme weather.

Jersey Zoo is home to more than 80 Chilean flamingos, which reside in the large central area on naturalistic mud flats next to the stream that runs through the Zoo's grounds. The species is endangered, with its natural habitats across South America under threat from mining companies.
Other local wildlife has also been affected by the storm.
Three goats were reported to have escaped from the aMaizin! Maze and a marine life rescue co-ordinator has warned that islanders can expect to see drowned seal pups washing up on local beaches.
