An end to States waste?

Friday 25 July 2014

Over 400 tonnes of fly ash from the Energy from Waste plant is being shipped out of the Island this week.

It’s the first of a series of waste shipments to remove the 15,000 tonnes of fly ash which has built up since the plant commenced operations in 2011.

Fly ash is the residue produced as a result of flue gas treatment process and for the last three years it has been stored in specially lined pits while Transport and Technical Services (TTS) sought the necessary approvals and funding for the shipments.

Contacts are now in place with the two local firms involved in the operation, AAL Recycling Ltd and Profreight, to remove it from the Island. AAL will repackage the bags ready for export and load them on to lorries, while Profreight is the shipping and haulage company.

From this week, TTS will be exporting eight trailer loads – equivalent to just over 200 tonnes – twice a week. The loads will be transported to Augean South Ltd in Peterborough, a specialist hazardous waste management company, for safe disposal.

It is hoped that the current backlog will be cleared by April next year, after which the waste shipments will be reduced to just two trailers a week on an ongoing basis.

Deputy Kevin Lewis, the Minister for Transport and Technical Services, said:

“I am so pleased that Jersey will be rid of this waste from La Collette. When I was elected as TTS Minister, I promised to do all I could to ensure this waste would leave the Island for safe disposal and/or recovery with an accredited operator and not left as a legacy for future generations.”

“It has been hard work to make it happen because there is so much protocol to go through, but we are there now and I am grateful for all the hard work put in to make it happen.”
