Environmentalists invited to bag cash from forgetful shoppers

Green projects in Jersey could get a big cash boost this year funded by Islanders who’ve been forgetting to recycle their shopping bags.

The Channel-Islands Co-operative Society is looking to help local environmental causes who can apply for cash from its EcoFund, set up seven years ago to try to slash plastic bag consumption.

The Society introduced a 5p levy on its plastic carrier bags back in 2008, cutting the numbers used by 90% in the first year alone and has since paid out over £280,000 to worthy causes in the Channel Islands. 

Chief Commercial Officer Jim Plumley said: “Once again we are looking for projects and initiatives across the islands that are helping to protect or regenerate the environment we all live in. Obviously we cannot support every project that is submitted but we do our best to help as many people as possible. For those who were unsuccessful last year, I would encourage them to reapply this year and of course we hope to hear from new initiatives."

Last year the National Trust for Jersey, The Birds of the Edge Partnership, Jersey Heritage, First Tower Community Association, Jersey Prison Service, Jersey Trees for Life and St Clement's Parish all cashed in on the initiative.

Mr Plumley said: "We believe that successful commercial business and strong ethics can co-exist and we put sustainability and the environment at the heart of our business. We will continue to explore ways to lead and support causes and projects that look to make a difference in our islands."
