You can find out what life’s like for one of the UK’s leading female MPs and some of the Island’s female politicians at an event at the Grand Hotel at the end of this month – which aims to get more local women standing for this year's elections.
Diane Abbott - the first black woman to be voted into Parliament – is the keynote speaker at the evening organized by the Jersey Community Relations Trust. She has been MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. Local Deputies Susie Pinel, Carolyn Labey, Kristina Moore and Tracey Vallois will also be talking about their experiences of being elected.
Trust Chairperson Dr Elena Moran said: “We are very pleased to welcome Diane to Jersey later this month. She will be joined by a panel of current female States Members to provide both national and local perspectives of political life.”
“As part of its promise of promoting equality and diversity, the JCRT is committed to tackling the under representation of women in politics. We believe that, without politicians who represent and reflect the electorate, you cannot have representative policy. The Trust is therefore running a series of events between June and September 2014, to encourage women to come forward and stand for political office. The event is also aimed at those who would like to support them in their campaigns.”
There will also be a series of weekend workshops organised for women interested in standing for the October elections where they can find out how to plan and run successful campaigns, get tips on dealing with the media and learn more about the Hustings and how the States Assembly works.

It’s part of the Women in Politics Series organised by the Trust and follows the success of their Advancing Women in Politics and Public Life conference last October when Dame Tessa Jowell spoke to 160 Islanders about her experiences as a British Labour Party politician.
