Famous writers arrive for big literary festival

Wednesday 30 September 2015

We’ve had the prologue - now it’s time for a new chapter as the Island’s first big literary festival gets underway.

A whole host of Internationally renowned writers are in the Island for Connections: Jersey Festival of Words 2015 – a celebration of writing, reading and literature.

The Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, award-winning novelists Owen Sheers and Alex Preston, best-selling children’s writers Holly Smale and Jess Bright and acclaimed scriptwriter and novelist Will Smith are among the top names joining our home-grown writing talent for the festival that aims to promote literature for all ages.

It all starts tonight with a tribute to the late Jersey poet and teacher Alan Jones at Jersey Library followed by a packed four-day programme of events at Jersey Opera House, CCA Galleries, Jersey Museum, Jersey Archive and the Harbour Gallery.

The festival includes presentations, talks, adult literacy initiatives and events for schools including an inter-schools Poetry Slam competition.

The organisers are hoping to make it an annual event and one that attracts the flourishing British book festival market to Jersey.

Jersey Literary Festival Association chairman Jennifer Bridge said: “Our aim is to celebrate and encourage a love of reading and writing in all forms for all ages and our ethos is inclusivity. There is something for everyone.

“The Jersey Festival of Words will be an annual event which we hope will grow in size and scope, both enriching Island life and attracting new visitors.”
