"We have wages to pay": Farm shop issues plea after "shambles" road closures

Friday 20 September 2024

A farm shop in St Brelade has issued a plea to customers reminding them that it is open as usual despite ongoing road closures that have resulted in a substantial drop in trade.

Kate Hackett of Brooklands Farm and the Me and the Farmer Farm Shop said the business had been losing "so much money" since drainage works began on Route des Genets and Mont Nicolle earlier this week.

She told Express that the issue related to a lack of "businesses open as usual" signs and expressed frustration that the farm was not told about the road closures in advance.

"It's an absolute shambles," Ms Hackett continued.

"We are losing so much money."

"We have wages to pay and we rely on money made in the shop," she added.

She stressed that the business was open as usual and added that customers would have easiest access approaching from St Aubin's Hill.

Traders in the east of the island also complained about trade impact due to road closures as Jersey Electricity contractors dug up Mont de Gouray to carry out essential work back in March.

Citing the loss of money due to decreased footfall, Entwhistle's Fish and Chips, Smile Laundry and Gorey Fruit Shop variously described the situation as a "nightmare".

Express has contacted the Government about the latest closures.
