Film society celebrates 70th anniversary with open-air screening

Saturday 02 September 2017

The Jersey Film Society (JFS) is celebrating its upcoming 70th anniversary with a free open-air screening of 'Casablanca' in St Andrew's Park tonight.

The free screening will start at 20:00, but film fans are encouraged to come to the park from 18:00 to picnic beforehand.

The JFS will turn 70 in December of this year and will be screening the classic 1942 film to kick off their new season at the Jersey Arts Centre. Following the recent passing of David Gainsborough-Roberts, the society's sole patron is Harry Patterson, better known as by his pen-name Jack Higgins.

The society aims to screen films which have cultural or cinematographic value that wouldn't normally be shown in larger commercial cinemas. With new strides in modern technology, the committee are confident that even after 70 years they have something new to offer.

The society has invited anyone to come along to their free screening with a chair, a torch and something to drink - although they have asked that no one brings glassware to the screening.

The Chugging Pig food van will be in the park from 18:00, so viewers have been reminded to bring cash along should they want to buy some food onsite.

Although the society has booked St Andrews Church for the screening in case of inclement weather, film viewers should also bring warm clothing.
