Investigation launched into cause of apartment block fire

An investigation is underway in to the cause of a fire which saw 30 people evacuated from an apartment block last night.

The Fire and Rescue Service was called to the to the scene at Belvedere Hill in St Saviour at around 22:45 on Tuesday night, after a resident awoke to a fire and heavy smoke in his room.

The Fire Service said the man had managed to escape after throwing a fire blanket over the flames.

He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

Around 30 occupants of the building's other self-catering units were evacuated and moved to accommodation in a “nearby” hotel.

The Fire Service said four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had entered the property to deal with the fire.

An investigation is now underway.
