Firefighters battling to contain a blaze in a farm workshop this morning had to close roads and set up an evacuation zone because of the danger of exploding gas cylinders.
The Fire Service were called to a farm on Rue de la Blanche Pierre at around 6.30 am this morning when the fire was reported, and before long a thick plume of smoke was visible from right across the Island.
All emergency services are now working at the scene, but there have been no reported casualties.
At around 9.10 am this morning Police confirmed that firefighters had controlled the blaze, but said that the evacuation zone and road closures would stay in place for now. Earlier this morning they had closed Mont Felard and advised people to stay away from the area.
Firefighters say that because there are gas cylinders in the workshop, they have had to set up a 100-metre evacuation zone. All people who live or work nearby have been told to stay indoors with their windows closed if they are in the “wind cloud area”.
