First open water festival launches

Saturday 26 August 2017

Jersey Swimming Club is hosting its first Open Water Festival at Ouaisne beach this weekend with four different races.

The event, sponsored by Intertrust, is open to swimmers of all ages with categories adapted to all generations.

The Race for Future Stars will take place today (Saturday) between 09:00 and 11:30. Swimmers will take to the water in allocated age groups to compete for island honours over distances of 1km, 3km and 5km. The 750m Fun Swim Challenge will see swimmers of all ages dive in between 11.00 to 12.00.

Tomorrow (Sunday), a Mix it with the Masters race for swimmers aged over 18 will take place between 9.30 and midday, and include 1km, 3km and 5km events. Teams of three will also be able to take part in a Relay Race between 11:00 and 12:00.

Carole Penfold, Jersey Swimming Club President, said the club is hoping to see many families and friends come down to Ouaisne. She also assured that they have taken care to ensure the swimmers' safety. She added: “We’re excited to be organising the 1st Jersey Open Water Festival, which wouldn’t be possible without Intertrust’s sponsorship. We are so lucky to live on a beautiful island with accessible opportunities to take part in open water swimming; we’d like more members of the community to get involved in the sport and the festival is a chance to see what it’s all about.”

Simon Mackenzie, managing director of Intertrust, said: "We are pleased to be sponsoring the 1st Jersey Open Water Festival. The festival is incredibly inclusive as it is not only open to experienced open water swimmers but there are categories for all ages and abilities. At Intertrust we see the importance in supporting local community events and encouraging people to be active and so we are delighted to be involved with this inaugural event.

“The Jersey Swimming Club does a great job in promoting swimming to the community and with their hard work we hope the festival will set a high benchmark and the event will become increasingly popular in the years to come.”
