'Flash sale' returns to make room for Acorn new shop

Saturday 27 January 2018

Acorn Enterprises is hosting another 'flash sale' today between 09:00 and 16:00 at its base in Trinity, with a majority of items on sale for 20p, to clear stock before a new retail space is built for the Acorn Reuse Centre.

The new shop will be seven times bigger than the current one and will be large enough to stock and resell white goods, such as refrigerators and washing machines. The charity hopes that the new store will enable the Acorn Reuse Centre to save even more waste

Since taking on the States' Reuse contract Acorn Enterprises is saving around 10 tonnes of waste a month from going into the waste stream. The charity hopes that the new store will enable the Acorn Reuse Centre to save even more waste.

Steve Pearce, General Manager, Acorn Enterprises, said: “Over one thousand shoppers turned up for our first sale and the enthusiasm shown by all was truly heartening. We are so thankful for everyone’s support and we were amazed to raise over £4,000 in one day. Our next Flash Sale will have a few higher priced items on sale for around £5 but the majority of goods will be on sale for 20p again. Everything must go as we need to make room to build our new shop.”

Jocelyn Butterworth, Executive Officer, Jersey Employment Trust, said: “The amazing success JET is having at the Acorn Reuse Centre is reflected not only in the benefits to the environment and through providing low-cost goods for low-income families but, in the benefits that have been created for our JET clients.

"So far, we have created 15 additional jobs and 40 new training placements for islanders with a long-term health condition and/or disability. The opening of our new shop will ensure we can create even more opportunities for our clients and help them find and maintain open employment. Anyone who buys something from our Flash Sale in January will rest assured they are helping Jersey in so many ways.”
