Flood warning issued by Met Office

The Met Office has issued a code red Flood Warning for tonight, urging Islanders to take "extreme caution".

High tide is at 8 pm and the Met Office say that the combination of strong winds and swell is expected to cause some limited flooding along the south coast.

They say that some coastal roads might have to be closed because of the weather.

The code red warning means that Islanders should take “extreme caution” and follow the advice of the authorities.

The Flood Warning follows advice issued by the Coastguard earlier this week urging boat owners to move their vessels if they’re on the outer moorings, adding that there was a big risk of damage if boats are not properly secured.

Senior marine officer Bjorn Risebrow said on Tuesday that they had already seen some damage.

He said: “A few vessels have broken adrift over the strong winds in the last few days. We have seen boats that have broken their moorings, and unfortunately when that happens they can drift anywhere – we have found a few on rocks, some quite badly damaged.”
