FlyDirect cancels rest of Med holidays

Thursday 20 August 2020

A company offering direct flights to Mediterranean destinations from Jersey has cancelled the remainder of its 2020 holiday programme after Spain and the Balearic Islands moved to 'red' status.

The updated travel classification means anyone returning to the island from these areas must enter compulsory quarantine for 14 days.

CI Travel Group's FlyDirect was due to continue its programme of flights to Palma, Majorca, until 20 September before switching to Costa del Sol in October.

However, following the travel classification change, the travel company has now announced its intention to cancel all flights.

Any clients currently on holiday will be able to fly home direct to Jersey this weekend. Those with future bookings are being offered a full refund.

"It is deeply regrettable that we have had to take the decision to cancel the remainder of our summer programme to the Mediterranean," Managing Director Robert Mackenzie said.

"However along with the health and well-being of our clients, in the light of the decision made by Jersey’s Government to move Spain to ‘Red’ status, we felt it is was important to provide certainty for those booked to travel in September and October by giving as much notice as possible regarding the cancellation of the remainder of the summer programme."

Under Jersey's travel classification system, countries are generally designated 'red' if they have more than 120 cases per 100,000 population.

With around 107 cases per 100,000, Malta is likely to be one of the next European destinations to be upgraded to the highest risk category.

Alongside Spain and the Balearic Islands, the other areas marked as red include Luxembourg, the Maldives, Moldova, Montenegro, South Africa, and the USA.
